The steps for "shelf reading" are:

1. Check in - sign the log, note your shelf number and take a Volunteer Badge 
2. Balance your shelf (does every shelf have about an equal number of books?) 
3. Check sequence book by book in the following order: 

1. Sort by the three letter code on the edge of the book 
2. Sort by the Author's Last Name 
3. Sort by the Author's First Name 
4. Sort multiple books by the same Author by Title (exclude "A", "An", "And" and "The" in the Title) 

1. Link the previous and the next shelf (is the last book in the previous shelf before the first book in your shelf, and is the last book in your shelf before the first book in the next shelf?) 
2. Straighten the books on your shelf (pull all of the books to the edge of the shelf - pull the bookends to tighten) 
3. In the final step, the parent(s) will review the work. 
4. Return the Volunteer Badge.
